The Churning of the Ocean: Seeking Amrita

The story of Neelkanth begins with the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean of milk), described in the Bhagavata and Shiva Puranas. The Devas had been weakened by Sage Durvasa's curse, allowing the Asuras to overrun the cosmos. To restore their immortality, Lord Vishnu advised them to churn the cosmic ocean to extract the elixir of life: Amrita.

Using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the massive serpent king Vasuki as the rope, Devas and Asuras joined forces for the monumental cosmic endeavor, with Vishnu incarnating as Kurma (the tortoise) beneath the mountain.

The Emergence of Halahala: Toxic Crisis

Before the gems and nectar could surface, the intense churning released Halahala (Kalakuta)—a lethal, boiling venom of such potency that its fumes scorched the heavens and threatened to exterminate all living beings across the three worlds.

Terrified, gods and demons fled. With nowhere else to turn, they sought refuge at Mount Kailash, begging Mahadeva to save creation from annihilation.

Mahadeva's Sacrifice and Parvati's Protective Touch

Moved by cosmic compassion, Lord Shiva cupped the deadly venom and swallowed it. Seeing this, Goddess Parvati immediately pressed her hands against Shiva's throat to prevent the venom from entering his stomach and harming the universe housed within his cosmic body.

The venom remained trapped in his throat forever, turning his neck deep blue. From that moment, the universe revered him as Neelkanth ('The Blue-Throated Lord').
