During the epic churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), both gods and demons laboured ceaselessly for the ultimate remedy to decay and mortality. On the sacred day of Kartik Trayodashi, the sparkling waters parted, and Lord Dhanvantari manifested holding scriptures, healing herbs, and a celestial pot overflowing with Amrit (the nectar of immortality).
Centuries later, an astrological prophecy decreed that King Hima's sixteen-year-old son was destined to perish from a venomous snakebite on the fourth night of his marriage. His devoted bride resolved to fight destiny itself.
She piled all her gold ornaments and brass vessels at the threshold of the chamber and lit dozens of glowing oil lamps throughout the courtyard, singing sacred hymns throughout the night. When Yamraj arrived in the guise of a serpent, the dazzling light blinded him, and he remained enchanted atop the gold until dawn arrived and the fateful hour passed.
In gratitude, people began the sacred tradition of 'Yama Deepdaan'—lighting a four-wick lamp facing south on Dhanteras night—while welcoming Lord Dhanvantari's healing grace into their households.
