On Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, married women observe a rigorous waterless (Nirjala) fast from sunrise until moonrise. The central narrative recited during the evening circle tells of Queen Veeravati, the sole sister among seven affectionate brothers.
Seeing her faint with hunger, her brothers held a lamp behind a sieve in a distant tree, tricking her into believing the moon had risen. She broke her fast, and immediately received news that her royal husband had collapsed into a death-like coma.
Heartbroken, Veeravati preserved her husband's body and spent an entire year in intense prayer. When Kartik returned, Goddess Parvati blessed her to observe the fast with total purity. As she offered water to the genuine moon, her husband woke up in vibrant health.
The festival also honors a dedicated woman named Karva, who spun raw cotton thread to bind a fierce crocodile that attacked her husband, compelling Yamraj to grant him longevity. These sacred legends remind us of the unyielding strength woven by selfless marital devotion.
