The house-warming ritual performed before moving into a new home.

आवश्यक पूजा सामग्री (Required Samagri)

  • A kalash filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut
  • A picture or idol of Lord Ganesha, and of the family's chosen deity
  • Milk (for boiling over on the stove as the first ritual act)
  • Roli, akshat, flowers, and a diya
  • Mango leaves for a toran (door hanging)

पूजा विधि क्रम (Step-by-Step Procedure)

  1. Choose an auspicious date and time (muhurat) for the Griha Pravesh, ideally avoiding inauspicious periods.
  2. Decorate the main entrance with a mango-leaf toran and rangoli.
  3. Begin with a Ganesh Puja for an obstacle-free start, followed by Vastu Puja to pacify and honour the energies of the plot and structure.
  4. The woman of the house traditionally enters first, right foot forward, carrying the kalash.
  5. Boil milk on the stove until it overflows — a symbol of abundance — as the first act performed in the new kitchen.
  6. Light a diya in the puja area and perform an aarti, inviting positive energy into the home.
  7. Some families also perform a Havan (fire ritual) as part of the ceremony.
