Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi
A step-by-step guide to the Karwa Chauth fast and evening puja.
आवश्यक पूजा सामग्री (Required Samagri)
- A karwa (small earthen or metal pot) for each woman observing the fast
- A thali with roli, akshat, a diya, and a small mirror, comb, and sindoor for the puja
- A sieve (chalni) for viewing the moon
- Sweets, and mathri or halwa-puri for sargi
- An idol or picture of Goddess Parvati (Karwa Mata), Lord Shiva, Ganesha, and Kartikeya
पूजा विधि क्रम (Step-by-Step Procedure)
- Before sunrise, eat sargi — a meal typically given by the mother-in-law — which sustains the fast for the day.
- Observe the nirjala fast (without food or water) from sunrise.
- In the evening, gather with other women for the Karwa Chauth katha, listening to the story of the fast's origin and significance.
- Perform the puja to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Ganesha, and Kartikeya, offering roli, akshat, and flowers.
- After moonrise, view the moon through the sieve, then look at your husband's face through the same sieve.
- The husband offers his wife water and food, formally breaking the fast.
- Conclude with an aarti and sharing sweets with family.
