History

Jwalamukhi in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, is a Shakti Peetha where the Goddess is worshipped as eternal flames issuing from rock — there is no murti in the sanctum. Mughal and later records mention the shrine; it remains one of the most visited Devi temples of the hills.

Legends

• The tongue of Sati is said to have fallen here; the flames are her living speech.
• Akbar is popularly remembered as having tried and failed to extinguish the jwala, after which he offered a golden parasol — a story still told on the yatra.
