History
Kamakhya on Nilachal hill in Guwahati is the most revered Shakti Peetha in eastern India. The temple’s garbhagriha has no image — a yoni-shaped stone in a cleft is bathed by a natural spring. The current structure largely dates to Koch and Ahom patronage.
Legends
- The Shakti Peetha tradition places Sati’s yoni here when Shiva wandered with her body.
- Ambubachi Mela marks the annual menstruation of the Goddess — the temple closes briefly, then reopens to vast crowds.
