History

Meenakshi Amman of Madurai is the queen of the Pandya capital and one of the grandest living temple complexes in India. The present Nayaka-period gopurams and thousand-pillared hall overlay a far older shrine. The Chithirai festival re-enacts her marriage to Sundareswarar (Shiva) each year.

Legends

• Meenakshi was born with three breasts to King Malayadhwaja; the third vanished when she met Shiva, and she ruled Madurai as warrior-queen before the divine wedding.
• Fish-shaped eyes (meena-akshi) mark her as the compassionate yet sovereign Goddess of the Tamil country.
