History

Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple in Varanasi was established by Goswami Tulsidas, author of the Ramcharitmanas, in the 16th century. It sits near the Assi ghat area and is one of North India’s most beloved Hanuman shrines.

Legends

• Tulsidas is said to have had a vision of Hanuman here; Tuesday and Saturday crowds swell for Hanuman Chalisa and sindoor offerings.
• The temple was targeted in a 2005 bombing but devotion returned stronger — it remains a symbol of Kashi’s resilience.
