History

Bateshwar near Morena in Madhya Pradesh is a cluster of nearly two hundred sandstone temples from the Gurjara-Pratihara period, restored from ravine ruins in recent decades. Most shrines are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi in miniature nagara form.

Legends

• The name Bateshwar is linked to bat (banyan) and Ishwar — Shiva under the groves of the Chambal.
• ASI restoration itself has become part of the site’s modern story: a sacred landscape returned from collapse.
