History

Bhojeshwar at Bhojpur, Raisen, is an unfinished Paramara temple commissioned by Raja Bhoja in the 11th century. It houses one of India’s largest lingams, under a never-completed shikhara — a unique glimpse of a great temple frozen in construction.

Legends

• Bhoja intended a temple to rival the greatest nagara shrines; legend says a ritual error or war stopped the work.
• The lingam itself is fully worshipped; incompleteness of the roof has not lessened Shaiva reverence.
