History

Jageshwar near Almora is a deodar-grove of over a hundred stone temples, mainly Shaiva, from the Katyuri and later periods. Jageshwar Mahadev and Mrityunjaya are the principal living shrines in this Kumaon tirtha.

Legends

• The grove is compared to a Himalayan Kashi — Shiva dwelling among deodars rather than ghats.
• Mrityunjaya worship here is sought for healing and fearlessness of death.
