History

Kalpeshwar in the Urgam valley is the Panch Kedar cave of Shiva’s hair (jata). It stays open longer into winter than the higher Kedars and is reached through a relatively gentle Garhwal walk.

Legends

• Shiva’s matted locks, which caught the Ganga, are the form worshipped in this cave.
• Sage Durvasa and other rishis are remembered as tapasvins of Urgam.
