History

Kiradu near Barmer preserves Maru-Gurjara temples of the 11th–12th centuries; Someshvara is the best surviving Shiva shrine. The desert complex is often called Rajasthan’s mini-Khajuraho for its sculpture.

• A curse-story says a sage turned the town to stone after inhospitality — explaining the ruined grandeur in folk memory.
• Someshvara remains the living name of Mahadev at this thar-edge kshetra.
