History

Madhyamaheshwar in a hanging valley of Garhwal is the Panch Kedar shrine of Shiva’s navel (nabhi). The approach is a longer trek than Tungnath, so the stone temple remains among the quieter Himalayan Mahadev seats.

Legends

• The middle (madhya) form of the hidden bull is worshipped here — hence Madhyamaheshwar.
• Winter, the utsava murti is brought down to a lower village, as at other seasonal Kedars.
