History

Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is the third Jyotirlinga and the only one among the twelve whose lingam is dakshinamukhi (south-facing). The temple on the Kshipra river has been rebuilt across Paramara, Maratha, and modern periods; Ujjain itself is one of India’s seven moksha-puris and a Simhastha Kumbh city.

Legends

• The Shiva Purana narrates that Shiva manifested as Mahakal to protect the city and the boy devotee Shrikhar (and the king’s son) from the demon Dushana.
• Bhasma aarti before dawn — offering sacred ash — is unique to this shrine and draws pilgrims from across India.
