History

Maheshwar on the Narmada was the capital of Ahilyabai Holkar, who rebuilt ghats and the Ahilyeshwar / Kaleshwar temples in the 18th century. The town remains a weaving centre and a gentle Shaiva–Narmada tirtha.

Legends

• Ahilyabai is remembered as a saint-queen who restored Somnath, Kashi, and dozens of shrines — Maheshwar was her home court.
• Sunset aarti on the Narmada ghats is the living heart of the town’s Mahadev bhakti.
