History

Omkareshwar is the fourth Jyotirlinga, on an island in the Narmada whose outline resembles the syllable Om. The paired shrine of Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) stands on the south bank; together they are treated as one Jyotirlinga kshetra. Paramara and later Holkar patronage shaped the stone temples pilgrims see today.

Legends

• The gods are said to have worshipped Shiva here in the form of Om; Vindhya’s penance to equal Meru is also localised to this island.
• Parikrama of Omkar Mandhata island and a boat darshan of the Narmada are themselves considered punya.
