History

Talakadu on the Kaveri is a group of Shiva temples that have repeatedly been buried and excavated from sand. Vaidyeshwara and neighbouring shrines belong to the Gangas and later Cholas; the Panchalinga darshana is a famous festival.

Legends

• A curse attributed to Queen Alamelamma — that Talakadu would become sand — explains the dunes in folk history.
• Five lingams along the river are worshipped as a single sacred circuit.
