History

Unakoti in Tripura is a hillside of colossal Shaiva rock carvings, dated roughly to the 8th–12th centuries. The site is both archaeological park and living tirtha, especially at Ashokashtami when pilgrims gather before the great Unakotiswara face.

Legends

• Unakoti means ‘one less than a crore’: Shiva is said to have cursed a crore gods and goddesses into stone when they failed to wake for the journey to Kashi.
• The giant Kal Bhairava / Unakotiswara head is the focal darshan of the forest shrine.
