History

The Venkateswara temple on Tirumala hill is among the world’s richest and most visited religious sites. Inscriptions date patronage to the Pallavas, Cholas, and especially the Vijayanagara empire; the TTD administers the shrine today.

Legends

• The Lord is worshipped as Srinivasa/Venkateswara who remained on the hill after marrying Padmavati, and devotees offer their hair and wealth as symbolic surrender.
• The appearance of the murti’s eyes through a unique netra darshan window is part of the living ritual calendar.
