Bhai Dooj, celebrated on the second lunar day (Dwitiya) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik, marks the glorious finale of the five-day Diwali festivities. Known variously as Yama Dwitiya, Bhai Tika, and Bhathru Dwithiya, it is dedicated to celebrating the purest, most selfless love: the bond between brother and sister.

Yamuna’s Longing and Yamraj’s Unexpected Visit

Lord Surya and his consort Sanjna had twin children: Yamraj, who was tasked with the solemn responsibility of maintaining cosmic justice and guiding departed souls, and Yamuna, who descended to Earth as the sacred, life-giving river.

Yamuna dearly loved her brother, but Yamraj was perpetually bound by his relentless cosmic duties across the three worlds. For years, Yamuna would invite him to visit her peaceful home, but Yamraj hesitated, thinking: 'Who would want the God of Death in their house? People dread my footsteps.'

Yet on the auspicious day of Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamraj decided to surprise his sister. When Yamuna opened the door and saw her brother standing before her, tears of joy filled her eyes. She embraced him warmly, washed his feet, and welcomed him with open arms.

The Feast of Affection and the Golden Boon

Yamuna had prepared a magnificent feast of delectable dishes, fruits, and sweets. She applied a sacred tilak of roli, chandan, and akshat on Yamraj’s forehead, garlanded him with fragrant flowers, and prayed intensely for his well-being, health, and eternal peace.

Yamraj, deeply moved by this outpouring of pure, selfless love that asked for nothing in return, felt tears well in his eyes. He turned to Yamuna and said: 'Sister, I am overwhelmed by your affection. Ask for any boon, and it shall be yours.'

Yamuna smiled gently and replied: 'Brother, I ask only two things: first, that you visit my home on this day every year to share this meal. And second, that any brother who visits his sister on this day, takes a sacred dip in my waters, and receives the protective tilak on his forehead shall never fear an untimely death, nor shall he suffer the terrors of the netherworld.'

Yamraj joyfully declared: 'Tathastu! So shall it be!' Since that day, this tithi is celebrated across Bharat as Yama Dwitiya and Bhai Dooj.

Rituals of Bhai Dooj: The Sacred Tilak, Aarti, and Sweet Offerings

On Bhai Dooj, brothers travel to their sisters' homes. The sister prepares a designated wooden chowki (seat), draws traditional alpana or rice paste patterns on the floor, and seats her brother facing east or north.

She applies a sacred tilak of red kumkum and unbroken rice (akshat) upon his third eye center, places a consecrated betel nut (supari) and dub grass in his palms, ties a sacred thread, and performs a clockwise aarti with an oil lamp. She feeds him sweets like peda or coconut laddoos, while the brother touches her feet in reverence and offers heartfelt gifts of gratitude.
