The Sun God Surya had twin children: Yamraj, the austere Lord of Justice and Death, and Yamuna, who flowed on Earth as a sacred, compassionate river. While Yamuna lived peacefully, Yamraj was consumed by his grim cosmic duties across the realms.
For years, Yamuna gently invited her busy brother to visit. Yamraj hesitated, believing mortals and gods feared his arrival. But on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, he surprised her at her riverside home.
Overjoyed, Yamuna welcomed him with open arms, washed his feet, applied a protective tilak of sandalwood and vermilion on his forehead, and prepared a lavish feast of delectable sweets and fruits.
